Arts & Culture

There is no need to wander far from the Washington University campus to enjoy the Arts & Culture that the St. Louis area has to offer.  Right here, on campus, you may visit the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum or take in a theater production at Edison Theatre.  Within walking distance of campus, in beautiful Forest Park, are the St. Louis Art Museum and the Missouri History Museum.  Also located within the park is the St. Louis Science Center which has something for all ages.  All of these sites are free to the public!
If you are the outdoors type, you may like to visit an ancient Indian civilization at Cahokia Mounds, or take a leisurely stroll through the Missouri Botanical Gardens.  Or, if you prefer staying indoors, you could visit the Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis where you can view a diverse collection of contemporary art.

the boathouse

For a cultural theater experience of dance and other creative expressions, from the African-American perspective, you may like to take in a show at The Black Repertory Theater of St. Louis, which was founded by a former Washington University in St. Louis student.  You may like to get lost in music and escape to another place while listening to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra at Powell Symphony Hall.
Forest Park, home of the 1904 World’s Fair, is across the street from campus.  Here you can visit the St. Louis Zoo for free!  You may rent a paddleboat at the Boathouse after enjoying lunch on the patio.  Play a round of golf on the The Highlands Golf Course, or just sit back and relax at one of the lakes.  During the evening, you may take in a live musical production at the Muny Opera.  Free seating is available at the Muny.  Forest Park has plenty to see and do, be sure to check out their website for a complete list of activities.

Entertainment

Laclede’s Landing on the St. Louis Riverfront, U City Loop, and the city of Clayton are communities that boast a wide variety of attractions as you walk along their sidewalks.  Some of these include eating and drinking establishments, unique shops, live music, movie theaters, art galleries, museums, parks and much more.  Two popular attractions are The Gateway Arch on the St. Louis riverfront and The Pageant for concerts and other live shows near the U City Loop.
If you are a sports fan, St. Louis has two professional sports teams that you can cheer for while in St. Louis:  The St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, and the St. Louis Blues hockey team.  For some carnival excitement, you can head to Six Flags Over Mid America, or lay low taking in the latest movies at nearby theaters.  The City Museum is a fun “hands on” experience for young and old.  You may also enjoy dining and a unique shopping experience, downtown, in the historic Union Station.
